Closer |
Description: |
The empty ethanol train draws closer, passing this old corrugated metal building, a common sight in these parts. Second unit is a visitor from afar. Wish I'd gotten a shot of that Airslide hopper behind the power. |

From a long way off |
Description: |
The trailing unit on the head end of the ethanol train was this CSX GE. It will be in the upper midwest in a few days, a good long way from home. |

DPUs rounding the bend |
Description: |
The trailing power is now in view, coming off the MKT onto the Mopac, with another surprise, this one from not so far away, but unusual just the same. |

Surprise from not so far off |
Description: |
The KCS is only about an hour away, over near Stilwell, and they connect with the UPs ex MP Van Buren sub in that town in Arkansas. But you dont see a lot of their power here. For the second week in a row, I found KCS power on the UP. Those coal train must have racked up a lot of horsepower hours. A KCSM unit brings up the rear of this 110 car train as it crosses SR 51 and heads for KC. |

Lucky catch |
Description: |
I was following UP 4014, which was running the ex MKT from Parsons Kan to Mc Alester, and had just pulled up to the crossing at the end of the day. This 117 car northbound was just getting underway, tiptoeing through the daisy pickers as it passed through the station area where the steam engine was on display. The meet shot is in the UP Steam album. |

Rare sight |
Description: |
Not the power, there are still tons of EMD 40s on the UP, and the paint scheme is the same as its been since the 1930s. The unusual thing about this train is its a northbound on the ex MKT. North of Wagoner, he UP uses directional running, since from there to KC, it has both the ex MP via Coffeyville Kan, and the ex MKT via Parsons Kan. It uses the MKT from KC almost exclusively for southbounds, except for this local based in Pryor, OK, 25 miles to the north. I caught it en route to my grandsons football game in nearby Coweta. Football and trains, cant go wrong-and they won!! |
