Album Info:The only thing about opening a time capsule and "Returning to Yesterday" is that the things that you might find there, are perhaps at best, only good for a limited number of people! As to why this might be, About these things I do not know and I can not say, except that Some people will understand and Some people will not! This is just the way it is! Some people dream a different dream--- because they have been told a different story. Thus they see things, in a different way. Some of these pictures I have not looked at or seen in over 40 years! They were taken in the middle to late 1960's by the young stallion that I once was back in those days when I was in high school or when I was working the interlocking towers on the Milwaukee Road near St Paul Yard and the St Paul Union Depot. It will take some time to review and upload the best of the several hundred pictures that there are in this collection. A special thanks to my friend Chris who works on the Amtrak desk on the mighty BNSF. Without his help and generosity, these images as he calls them would possibly not yet have been scanned, and I would not yet be uploading them, and thus not sharing them with you! Most of the dates for these pictures will be a guess or approximation of a date within the middle to late 1960's. I remember the places, but not so much the dates.

two yard engines and a caboose
Title:  two yard engines and a caboose
Description:  there were two yard leads on the west end of Daytons Bluff. It looks like one engine is waiting "in the clear" until the other one with the caboose finishes making its move and the lead is then clear for a lite engine.

Title:  back when there still were some
Description:  the NP tower at Mississippi Street sat between the yard to the north and the roundhouse and diesel shop to the south. This was all a couple of miles from the St Paul Union Depot. Milw lite engine
Title:  Milw lite engine
Description:  at the east end of Hoffman Avenue the signals look different than they do today, that is before ctc and before the interlocking tower was torn down! Since I once worked there, I can say that this is probably the engine hostler coming back from Minneapolis. It is very doubtful that a train crew would have been running with the engine 153 long nose first. And since they are going east on the westward freight main as the track headed out of the yard, I would say that they are going to the roundhouse. Hoffman Avenue was a busy place and still is today. That is why I liked working there, in those days!

Milwaukee cabeese
Title:  Milwaukee cabeese
Description:  on the westward freight main here is the rear end of a train with two cabeese. And for that reason I doubt that they were going to Duluth. I used to watch them going by Hoffman Avenue heading for the crossovers at Division Street with four F7s on the head end and four more as a helper on the rear end! After having sat idle in the yard, you should have seen the smoke rolling out of them as they crossed over at Division Street and headed up the hill passed Hamm's Brewery on their way north! That is going to Duluth on the NP!

Sunrise1
Title:  Sunrise1
Description:  as the sun rises and another 3rd trick begins to end for the leverman/ telegraph operator at Hoffman Avenue, this is the view that I had looking east towards Daytons Bluff and St Paul Yard. The Milwaukee freight mains were right hand running and the two center tracks were the passenger mains and they were left hand running! It was a busy and interesting place to work! The cement company in the middle of the picture and the grain terminal that loaded river barges, were served by the St Paul Bridge and Terminal or in this case it was known to most people as the CGW! The 3 right hand tracks towards the river were Milwaukee and the 3 left hand tracks towards the bluff belonged to the Burlington.

Title:  and nobody cared that I was there
Description:  the workers did the work and everybody left everybody--- including me alone! People had respect for others and it was clear to everyone, who the officials were and where they were! It was not like the "weed weasels and snakes in the grass" that there are today, who sit off in the background listening to she radio, perhaps with their feet on the desk! The guy on the right by the water tender with the long coat and hat looks like someone that I could respect for that which he was! Someone who really cared about how things were going and could actually do something to help the men when they needed help!

Description:  in downtown St Paul at the GN freight house, you can see the 1st Bank sign in the background that has probably been there since the early 1930's!
