Orange Blossom Special |
Description: |
Seaboard, RF&P and Chessie revived an old passenger train name to boost a pair of intermodal trains between Jersey and Florida. It was easy to spot, as it had RF&P power leading north of Richmond, due to the cab signalling unique to them. The power often ran through to Jersey, as on this days edition, seen at Anacostia in DC. Check out the Conrail IH maintenance truck at left. |

Five units north |
Description: |
There's a surprise in there too-the 4th unit is a BQ 23-7. The spot I had there at Collier was excellent-nice little pull off to park in, shaded by pines, easy to sit and have a soda and read the paper. The only drawback was that the trains often came on you so fast you could not really set up. The afternoon was not so bad-the parking area was on the west side of the tracks-but the morning was a challenge, as you could not get over to the sun side fast enough. So this is a dark side shot. So it goes. |

Rolling by Crystal City |
Description: |
A new(in the mid 80s) development in the DC area was Crystal City in Arlington VA, which sat next to National Airport(its Reagan now) and alongside the RF&P at a place known as RO, where it ended and the Pennsy began. B&O trains also came through here to reach Potomac Yard, which itself would fall to changing freight patterns over the next decade, becoming a fertile field for new real estate. CSX melded the RF&P-still independent then-and the B&O lines north of DC, connecting them with the southern half of CSX at Richmond. Heres train 405 rolling onto the RF&P at RO behind a mix of the new companys power. |

Empties and a GP 30 |
Description: |
Unlike todays constant parade of six axle monsters, the 1980s found all manner of power on coal trains. Though good to see, it was not a total surprise to find a GP 30 on this 142 car empty coal train headed back to the mines. |

Local with heritage power |
Description: |
It was good to see this SCL unit, relatively untouched, working at North Collier, though predecessor painted power would hang on for a few more years. |

Northbound out of the sun |
Description: |
One of the downsides of a north/south line was that northbounds were coming out of the sun much of the day. This one has a SBD U36B leading a pair of GP 38s on train 300, rolling 57 cars toward the RF&P. |
