Album Info:The Columbia River Gorge stretches approximately 80 miles along the Oregon-Washington Border. Between Vancouver, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and Pasco, Washington, BNSF and UP's mainlines parallel each other on either side of the Columbia River. The BNSF, on the former SP&S route, runs on the Washington side of the river, while UP's route follows across the river and border in Oregon.

Union Pacific Albina Yard
Title:  Union Pacific Albina Yard
Description:  While making my way to Vancouver, I fired off a couple shots of the Union Pacific yard in Portland while crossing overhead. This image, while blurry, was still salvageable. The stack train in the background is parked on the main track that bypasses the yard. The bottom tracks are the northernmost tracks of Albina Yard (mostly empty today due to a traffic downturn), and the middle tracks are MOW and engine terminal tracks. Parked on the engine terminal lead are three engines and a slug. After careful examination of the engines and images on rrpicturearchives.net, I was able to identify the middle engine and slug as UPY 3001 and 3002. 3001 is a GP59ECO, an ex-Cotton Belt GP40-2 rebuilt with a 710ECO engine. 3001 is the only engine of its kind on the UP (as far as I was able to deduce), and is mated with slug 3002. 3002 was another Cotton Belt GP40-2. Its engine was removed, and its traction motors now provides increased tractive effort at slow speeds. The two unit set is captive to the Portland area, operating at Brooklyn and Abina Yards.

Description:  BNSF 4305 hides behind tres as it takes on a new crew. The C44-9W is in charge of a westbound grain train parked on the Seattle-Fallbridge connecting track, to the northeast of the Vancouver station. The train has just traversed the Columbia River Gorge on the Fallbridge Sub from Pasco, and will take on a new crew for the run up the Seattle Sub to Kalama, where the train will terminate.

Description:  With a fresh crew, the westbound grain train snakes through the crossovers onto the Seattle Sub main 2. BNSF 5147, a C44-9W, is the rear DPU on this loaded train of 112 cars. As the train leaves town, it passes under the Mill Plain Boulevard overpass.

Description:  The Vancouver Amtrak station bustles with activity on a sunny June Thursday. As BNSF 2674 idles next to the west side platform, 2236 drills the south end of the Vancouver yard. The dispatcher has their hands full, shuffling the yard job between two grain trains and an Amtrak Cascades train, all due to pass throug the junction in a span of 50 minutes.

Title:  Amtrak Crosses The Columbia
Description:  Looking down the length of the BN 9.6 Bridge, we see Amtrak Cascades #504 approaching on the northbound main. The train is led by Siemens Charger 1401, and will soon be slowing for its Vancouver station stop. As the passenger train approaches, an inspection crew makes their rounds on the south main. This bridge was built in 1908, and has been in constant service since then carrying trains across the Columbia River.

Title:  Amtrak and BNSF Crowd The South End
Description:  The south end of the Vancouver yard is hopping with activity. Preparing to depart the station is Amtrak Cascades #504. The Vancouver Center signal bridge (right) shows green-over-red, giving permission for the train to depart. The train will take the northbound main track (Seattle Subdivision Main 2) to its next stop at Kelso. Simultaneously, a grain train is entering the Vancouver wye from the east (out of frame). This train will follow the Amtrak northbound after a crew change. A yard switcher, BNSF 2236, drills the south end of the yard in the meantime (headlight visible at right). On a sidetrack, BNSF 2674 is fired up prior to its next assignment.

The inbound crew has just brought a train through the Columbia River Gorge from Pasco, and the outbound crew will bring the train along the next part of its journey towards Seattle. The lead unit, BNSF 5465, is a C44-9W, built in mid 2000, while the second unit, BNSF 6222, is a 2007-built ES44AC.

Description:  BNSF 6232 brings up the rear of a northbound grain train. The train has just come off the Fallbridge Subdivision from Pasco, and has taken on a new crew for the run up the Seattle Sub northbound. As the DPU clears the Vancouver Center signal, the last cars can be seen crossing onto the Seattle Sub.

Title:  Waiting at Wishram
Description:  Three GEVOs wait to take a BNSF southbound out of Wishram Yard. Once the train has recieved a fresh crew, the train will cross the Columbia River just west of here, and run south on the Oregon Trunk Sub to Chemult and points south. In the lead is BNSF 6880, an ES44C4 built between 2009 and 2015. These units are six-axle, four motor engines (the center axle is an "idler" and has no traction motor). Also in the consist are ES44DC 7822 and ET44C4 3827.

Description:  BNSF 7822 is the second unit on a southbound manifest freight parked in the yard at Wishram. The train is likely waiting on a new crew for the next leg of its journey along the Oregon Trunk Subdivision to Chemult. 7822, like the other engines in this consist, is a product of General Electric. Once the newcomer to the domestic diesel-locomotive market, GE has since become the dominant locomotive manufacturer in the US, and their design for road freight engines has remained the same for the past 30 years.

Description:  BNSF 6560 is parked on a side track at Avery, just west of Wishram, Washington. We had in fact seen this same train just hours before, when it passed through Dallesport. 6560 is the DPU on this train. It isnt visible in this image, but the manifest freight has been doubled onto the second siding at Avery. After taking on a new crew, this train will be put back together and continue onto the Oregon Trunk Subdivision heading south. This train is likely bound for Klamath Falls, Oakland, or points further south.

Title:  Rails Along the River
Description:  Mount Hood looms over the vast expanse of the Columbia River Gorge Looking west from Avery, Washington, the BNSF Fallbridge Subdivision can be seen in the right foreground. The line is single track from here the rest of the way to the outskirts of Vancouver. On the Oregon side of the river, cars on Interstate 84 are visible. The city of The Dalles lies just around the bend in the river, no more than 8 miles away.
