Album Info:
Caltrain operates one of the busiest commuter routes on the west coast. With up to a dozen trains an hour, there is lots of action. Added to the mix are trains from Amtrak, Altamont Corridor Express, and Union Pacific. This album includes photos throughout the year of 2021.

Caltrain 923
Description:
Caltrain 923 leads train 656 into Capitol station. 923 was built in 2003 by MPI. Train 656 is an extended service train, running the complete route from San Francisco to Gilroy, with a total trip time is 2 1/2 hours. #656 is a combination of trains #408, #310, and #412, and only runs on modified-schedule days, such as MLK Jr. Day and Presidents Day.

AMTK 166
Description:
Amtrak 166 is the second unit on the southbound Coast Starlight passing through Tamien Station. 166 and leading unit 144 are running elephant-style today, and were both built in 2001. 166 has an interesting feature that appears to unique to it; a silver pilot. The front pilot of Amtrak P42s are usually dark gray, but 166's is a unique silver color. I don't know if this is some unique repaint, or merely a symptom of road-wear. EDIT: 6 months after this image was taken, Amtrak 166 was involved in a fatal collision and derailment in Mendon, Missouri.

Caltrain 504
Description:
JPBX 504 leads a deadhead of Bombardier passenger equipment through Tamien station northbound. 504 was built in 1974 for SP, and went to UP following the UP/SP merger in 1996. In the mid-2000s, Caltrain was looking to replace the two GP9 locomotives they operated in MOW service, which were nearly 50 years old. They purchased 2692 (now renumbered to UP 1290), along with sister unit UP 1289 (another ex-SP unit), and the two came to the railroad in the mid 2000s.
