Album Info:Caltrain operates one of the busiest commuter routes on the west coast. With up to a dozen trains an hour, there is lots of action. Added to the mix are trains from Amtrak, Altamont Corridor Express, and Union Pacific. This album includes photos throughout the first six months of 2022.

Description:  Caltrain 908 shoves another northbound out of San Jose as the sun sets in the west. 908 is in charge of train #515 northbound, a limited-service train that makes 10 intermediate stops between San Jose and San Francisco. Total trip time for this service is 74 minutes, 8 minutes longer than the faster "700" Baby Bullet service, and 25 minutes faster than the slowest "100" Local trains.

Starlight At Sunset
Title:  Starlight At Sunset
Description:  The northbound Coast Starlight, led by two venerale P42s, glides into San Jose Diridon right on schedule at the end of the day. The two big General Electric behemoths, each with 4,200 horsepower, have just raced their train through the Salinas Valley, making 79 MPH all the way. Amtrak 38, the lead engine, was built in late 1996.

Description:  Caltrain 912 shoves northbound train #133 out of San Jose Diridon. Caltrain runs on stringent timetables, and the engineer wasnt going to wait for a railfan to run down to the other end of the train. The 1985-built F40PH shoves in notch 4 or 5 to get the train started, before the engineer cuts to idle as the train coasts out of the station. On the far right is Amtraks Coast Starlight, which had arrived just minutes before.

Sunset and Starlight
Title:  Sunset and Starlight
Description:  The sun sets on San Jose as the northbound Coast Starlight boards passengers. Led by two of Amtraks veteran P42DCs, the train is running on time as it makes its second crew change. It was 51 years to the month that the first iteration of the Coast Starlight began service. Since then, the service and the route it travels have experienced great change, none more evident than San Jose. The tracks on the far left were once a coach/freight yard, served by Southern Pacific locals. All that is gone now, replaced with extended platforms for Caltrain and Capitol Corridor services. The only vestiges of the SP era are the tri-light signal bridge at the north end, and the cornice of the station building, emblazoned with "Southern Pacific Lines" above the front door. Even the SP-style signals wouldnt last much longer, being replaced just two months after this image was taken.

Description:  Caltrans 2124 leads a southbound Capitol Corridor train into San Jose Diridon. The Siemens Charger was built in 2020 to supplement a previous order of 22 units. These units, numbered 2101-2122, are assigned to the Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, and San Joaquin trains, operated by the State of California. 2124 and sister unit 2123 bring the total number of California DOT Chargers to 24, and operate on the San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor trains.

Description:  F59PHI 2007 rests at Diridon on a early June afternoon. At one time, F59s were common on Amtraks western corridor services, but with the sale of Amtraks 21 units to Metra, the state-owned PHIs became the last bastion of EMD units in Amtrak service in the west. F59s are also operated by Sounder in the Pacific Northwest and by Metrolink in Southern California, although the Metrolink engines are reaching the end of their careers as well.
