KCS TOLMAK |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern office car TOLMAK was parked on a former auto unloading track at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. That was an auto unloading ramp at the end of the track and the east end of the diesel shop was on the right. The name TOLMAK was derived from the first letter of the six states then served by the railroad: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas. The car was subsequently renamed the NEW ORLEANS and is still in service. |

MP Trains |
Description: |
This photo is a bit fuzzy because it was made from a small section of a telephoto shot. It shows a pair of eastbound Missouri Pacific trains that were parked just west of the railroad's Avondale Yard, waiting to get in. On the left was Southern run-through train HNS (Houston-New Orleans to the Southern) with SD40-2 3239, SD45 3161 and SD40 3183; while next to it was an unidentified train with GP38-2 2251, U23B 4505 and GP38-2 2292. The next year the MP would merge with the UP and the Southern would merge with the Norfolk & Western, so scenes like this would soon disappear. |

KCS Train No. 53 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern train 53 - running as Extra 657 South - was crossing the entrance to the Airline Drive-In Theater about a mile from its destination at New Orleans' WEST YARD. The second unit was F9Am 4053, and when this photo was taken, F-units and older geeps had recently began running with SD's on the line into New Orleans. I was told this was a fuel conservation measure, but it also released SD's for use elsewhere on the railroad. Before long, the usual power became a trio of newer geeps or a GP-slug-GP set. |

SP Transfer Run |
Description: |
A westbound Southern Pacific transfer run was passing the LSU Dental School on the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary, en route from the Louisville & Nashville’s GENTILLY YARD to the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD. The transfer run was powered by seven locomotives, which had gone to the L&N on two separate trains. Combining power on transfer runs from the L&N to the SP was not unusual because there was typically an imbalance of traffic, with more eastbound trains. The locomotives were SSW GP20R 4137, SP GP20’s 4085 and 4079, SSW GP20R’s 4143 and 4148, SP GP35 6664 and SSW GP35 6502. |

F&P 4655 |
Description: |
Fordyce & Princeton 4655 is a former Rock Island pulpwood car which the F&P acquired when it bought the 57-mile line between Fordyce and Crossett from the Rock's estate in 1981. The car is hauling bundles of plywood "cores" from the Georgia Pacific plywood plant at Fordyce to their stud mill at Crossett. Each core is about 4-5/8 inches in diameter, and is what is left over after the veneer is peeled off of a log to make plywood. At the stud mill, each core is made into two 2x4 studs, and whatever is left is made into chips for the paper mill. GP modified these cars with short lengths of rail mounted crosswise to form shallow vees which supported the core bundles. (Information from Russell Tedder, former president of Georgia Pacific railroads.) |

Former IC Depot |
Description: |
The former Illinois Central depot at Amite, Louisiana was occupied by the local police department when this photo was taken, and it was in very nice condition. 843 is the distance to Chicago; and 4355 was probably the town's population, as the distance to New Orleans is about 66 miles! |
