Here is page one of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 27. Lead Caption: "On the Way to Pittsburgh ~ Great Bend on the Alleghenies," 'Every Saturday' magazine, March 4, 1871, p. 200." The notice posted at the top right of this locomotive's cab reads: "The Steam Pressure on This Boiler must Never Exceed 130 Pounds to the Square Inch."

Bottom Photo Caption: "Tripleheader Atlantics, westbound with a passenger train, led by E-3d #3002 (Juniata, c/n 1427, 01/06), circa 1907." PRR engine #3002 is an E-3D (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-3D during 1906, renumbered "4172" in April of 1913, rebuilt as an E-3SD in May of 1916, and retired in August of 1930.

Here is page three of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 29. Top Photo Caption: "D-16b #741 (AMS, c/n 2131, 06/00) is at the coal wharf, which was put into service at the beginning of February 1891." PRR engine #741 is a D-16B (4-4-0) "American" built in Altoona as a D-16B during 1900, rebuilt as a D-16SB in November of 1916, and retired in January of 1930.

Here is page four of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 30. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "G-4s #162 (Juniata, c/n 660, 03/00) is taking water at the coal wharf while H-6a #214 (Juniata, c/n 601, 08/99) sits beside her." PRR engine #162 is a G-4S (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" built in Juniata as a G-4 in 1900, rebuilt as a G-4S in August of 1916, and retired in November of 1927. PRR engine #214 is an H-6 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata during 1899 and retired in February of 1926. Bottom Photo Caption: "Fresh out of the shop, E-2a #1416 (Juniata, c/n 934, 09/02) is being broken in. An H-6a 'smooth bore' with a freight train is taking water."

Middle Photo, Partial Caption: "New York-to-Pittsburgh Aerotrain, in the summer of 1956." Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Centipede #5834 assisting a westbound freight up Horseshoe Curve, circa 1956." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5834 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948; it was designed to be a 3,000 horsepower passenger locomotive (BP-60A), but was later downgraded to be a 2,500 horsepower freight and helper engine (BH-50). "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial," Page 42, 2004
Description:
Here is page 11 of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 42. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "PC (ex-PRR) snappers U-25c #6511 and SD-35 #6032 earning their keep on a westbound freight ascending Horseshoe Curve on March 2, 1969." Both "snappers" were built in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. Penn Central engine #6511 was built by General Electric, but #6032 was built by GM-EMD. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Here, a mixed lashup of six diesels descends while one of the Pennsy's 'patented' mail and express trains (with a few coaches thrown in at the end) climbs westbound with EMD passenger units in charge. June 1966." The last of the six eastbound diesels is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9829, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Both photos by Ken Murry.
