Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin (and a handful in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) in the fall of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

Description:  A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right).

Description:  A CN local services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The mill's Model RK330 G4 Mobile Railcar Mover will soon extract a cut of cars which will be taken away by the local. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. The turnout in the foreground has been partially dismantled. To the right, a new turnout has been assembled next to the one it will soon replace. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. Description:  A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Description:  The local power rests at its usual parking spot on the yard lead at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Sep. '18. I thought this might be the locomotive I saw a few years ago, on which all four number boards had a different font. However, after watching it move around on subsequent days, it looks like only the number board on the front at right is mismatched. The north leg of the wye is partially visible at lower right.

This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Description:  A CN local approaches S. Lawe St. as it prepares to spot a boxcar for the Neenah Paper mill (formerly Fox River Paper Co.), 600 S. Vulcan St. (at right), via former C&NW rails on Grand Chute Island in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 6 Oct. '18. The Fox River Paper Co. was founded in 1883. It experienced numerous changes in ownership between 1961 and 2007, when it was purchased by Neenah Paper, Inc. The Neenah Paper Co. was organized in 1885, taking over a mill started by the Patten Paper Co. in 1873. The water at left is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. The mill race passes under the Neenah Paper facility. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which he speculated would be built soon after. He was right. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

The Neenah Paper Co. was organized in 1885, taking over a mill started by the Patten Paper Co. in 1873. The small white, building background right is a replica of the Vulcan Street Plant, the country's (world's) first Edison hydroelectric central station designed to serve both residential and commercial customers. It began operation 25 Nov. 1882. This replica stands at the approximate location of the original. This generator was identical to its more famous twin, which was installed in the Appleton Paper and Pulp Co. mill 3/4-mile upstream and began supplying electricity 30 Sep. ‘82. That one was commercial only, although it did also supply the paper mill owner’s, Henry J. Rogers, neighboring home. There is a surprising amount of inaccurate and inconsistent information regarding these two electrical facilities on the internet. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. Title:  GTW 5856
Description:  A CN local crosses the Newberry Trail as it starts to ascend the grade out of 'The Flats' while headed northeast via the former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 Oct. '18. Train was coming off of the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal as it headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. It is difficult to imagine that this trail used to be a 2-lane street, although not a heavily trafficked street, up until a couple of decades ago. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Description:  A CN through freight approaches Hwy. M as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 8 Oct. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2035 and GECX 7366. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, just out-of-frame to the right.

Description:  A CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 14 Oct. '18. There are two milepost markers, a newer one on a fence post next to the telephone pole, and an older one halfway up the telephone pole. The large brick building partially visible above the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 15 Oct. '18. They have just returned from servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) east of Washington St. The former C&NW depot/yard office is partially visible behind the locomotive. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state.

Title:  CN 3084, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars passes the W. Bell St. overpass and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Oct. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3084 pulling and ? pushing. At left, SOO 519043 rests on former C&NW rails. Quite an usual spot to find a solitary autorack. Plus, I don't encounter SOO equipment near this former SOO main line often enough, so I was compelled to attempt to incorporate it within the scene. Unfortunately the natural lighting was less-than ideal.

'18. The interlocking tower that once guarded the junction stood to the right, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it w`s torn down circa 1995. I thought the tower stood by the clump of trees on this side of the boxcar, but a review of others' photographs on this site as well as some old maps has proven that my recolleXtion of the tower's location was erroneous. There are remnants of a foundation there, but it must have been something else.

Description:  A CN local rounds a curve and approaches Hwy. O as it heads southeast with six cars via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI on 16 Oct. ‘18. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville which is 1-mile due east of here, it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. The station sign, which read Mackville, was stolen between 13 Jun. and 9 Jul. ’14, not long after I posted a photograph of it on this site. I presume it was stolen; I would think if the railroad had removed the sign they would have removed the posts as well. Both posts stood barren for quite a while. One of the posts still stands next to the track, the other lies on the ground. Some remnants of the depot’s foundation are hidden in the overgrowth. Part of the passing siding can be seen at right, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service the idle facility partially visible to the right (most recently Southwest Stainless & Alloy, previously Stainless Tubular Products). The cool, old barn in the background has a loading dock extending to the spur.
