Album Info:
First of all, this album is NOT intended to be an album about Lancaster, PA. I've only put that location down because the system won't allow me to omit location. Also, dates in this album are often wrong or estimated, as this is mostly older stuff that I don't have logs for. Any tips would be welcome. This album actually includes many of my U.S. rail photos, from all over the country, and the dates are included only because they're required. In reality, the album is very broad, and includes (or will include) material from many different states.

This is one of my oldest scanned rail photos. Originally it was color, and shot with 110 film, but when I scanned it I only had a black and white Omniscan, and when I looked for it recently I couldn't find the original to make a rescan, so here's the old scan. The date is guessed, but I know at least that it was in the Fall of 1990.

AMTK 160 (date is almost certainly wrong other than that it was early 1993)
Description:
Back when the Rohr Turboliners were mostly unrebuilt, they operated over the entire Empire Corridor (ex-New York Central Water Level Route), and I rode thxm a few times before they were first withdrawn, then rebuilt and reintroduced on a dedicated NYP-Albany-Rensselaer service. If you're a New York railfan, you know theÜrtory. If you're wondering how I got into the shop, it was an organized tour. These things always require a lot of permissions and paperwork, of course, and I haven't been able to get back there since.

CR 6017 (the date is a guess)
Description:
I took this on the same day as the 6399 shot, scanned it in 1994, and uploaded it to Flickr on Oct. 26, 2006, without a rescan!!! That's when I discovered the date on the 6399 shot was wrong. I corrected it at least on the caption, although the photo remained wrong, at least until I rescanned it in color, which is what you see here. In any case, I didn't used to like this photo so much, but looking at the other stuff on Flickr, this one held up surprisingly well. It was my first truly successful pan shot, so it's significant to me for that reason, too. In any case, here it is on rrpicturearchives.net for the first time.

Conrail 6399 (date is a guess)
Description:
I took this one in 1993, waiting in Utica, New York for Amtrak's (actually Swedish Railways') X2000 tilt train to visit. That may give a clue as to the date, but I don't have good source material handy right now. Does anybody know? It was hours late, and didn't arrive until after dark, so all of my best shots were taken during the day waiting for it, while I still had light. This locomotive, an EMD SD40-2 diesel, was leading a lashup of other locomotives pulling a garbage train. In those days, New York State had so much garbage that it was being shipped west by rail! I mainly like the impression of speed that this photo gives, with the blurred handrails and headlight, even if the train was only going about 50 m.p.h.!!!

Description:
I'm going to have to look up the correct date of this wreck one of these days. I really have no idea what it is, other than that it was early 1993, as confirmed by the just-blooming trees in the background. I took this shot during the aftermath and cleanup of a major wreck in Utica, NY involving a loaded stack train headed by G.E. Dash 8s. The Dash 8s are gone by this point, with the smashed well cars and containers bulldozed to the side, and one track has been reopened, letting these GP40-2s through, rare even by 1993 standards. The wreck, according to the news reports, was deliberately caused by a group of teenagers, who were subsequently arrested for the crime, but the results of the case were kept secret because of their ages. One person, perhaps not the smartest person in the world, blamed it on the railroad, saying something along the lines of "I don't know why they put the railroad so close to the housing development." The housing development where the teenagers came from dated to the 1960s, the railroad to the 1830s.

Description:
I took this on an official guided tour of Selkirk railroad yard, and because if its rarity this photo has been very popular wherever I've posted it. I took it from the tower, which is part of the reason why. We also get a good look at some classic Dash 8s from above, back when the Dash 8 was the last word in mainline freight motive power in North America. The date is regrettably a guess, as I don't have my records with me.

The Cable Cars of the San Francisco Municipal Railway Powell & Hyde Line run from the corner of Powell and Market Streets to Beach, which is actually a beach on San Francisco Bay rather than on the Pacific Ocean, near Aquatic Park. There, a turntable allows them to change direction, as they aren't uni-directional. The momentum of the moving cable car rolls it onto the turntable, as seen in Picture 1, the cable car is turned by hand, as in Pictures 2 and 3, and then the car is pushed back onto the active track, only for the opposite direction. It can then be reconnected to the cable upon departure.

San Francisco Municipal Railway #25 At The San Francisco Cable Car Museum
Description:
Cable Cars aren't universally considered trams. That's the purpose that they serve, though, for all practical purposes. The main thing that makes them different from others is that standard trams are powered through overhead cantenary that powers electric traction motors that power each axle, whereas Cable Cars are pulled along by a cable underneath the street. In any case, I got my chance to ride and photograph the San Francisco Municipal Railway, the last of the traditional Cable Car systems, in 1993. All of the other surviving systems operate on the less-standard "funicular system," used on steep hills. Unlike a standard cable car system, a funicular is limited by the fact that the cable is connected to both cars (all TWO! :-)) semi-permanently, so while one goes up the hill, the other goes down. This would never work in S.F., though, since it's a full-service system with many cars running on different streets. Therefore, the cables are controlled from a central cable house, pictured here on the right, which is also the San Francisco Cable Car Museum. The cars then can run semi-independently of the cable house's whims, controlling their access to the constantly moving cables under the street through the use of a "grip," that is sort of between a pliers and an automotive clutch. As such, cable car drivers are called "grip men (or perhaps women)."

ex-ATSF 347C At The California State Railroad Museum, Picture 2
Description:
These diesels, to the uninitiated, were idolized in movies, on TV, and in countless model trainsets, and still are today. It might be the most-modelled diesel of all time. The only railroad that used the "Warbonnet" paint scheme was the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe (ATSF) Railroad (now Burlington Northern Santa Fe, or BNSF), introducing the scheme on their E1A passenger diesels in 1937. The F-Unit series of freight diesels, like the E1As, were built by EMD from 1939-1960, and the Santa Fe were the first buyers in 1941, continuing to be regular customers for them until the mid-1950s. #347C is the ultimate classic variant of F-Unit, the F7A Phase I, and in this case is equipped for passenger service with 102 m.p.h. gearing and a steam generator (or at least it would have had these things originally). I don't remember the date #347C was built, but it certainly would have been around 1949, as that was when the F7A was introduced, and that's when the Phase Is were, of course, being built.

Description:
This shot looks difficult to get, but in actuality all I had to do to get it legally was point the lens through the chainlink fence. This is certainly a period shot at this point, though, as most railroads, especially Union Pacific, the current owners of this works, use diesels with safety cabs now. When I took this, though, this was a Southern Pacific facility, and if you look carefully to the left, you can see an EMD SD45 painted in the Kodachrome color scheme that was planned for the aborted Souther Pacific/Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe merger. These locomotives were a common sight in the 1980s and early 1990s, but now they're of course very, very rare, if there are any left at all. There are obviously some other locos in the photo too, but its the SD45 that really stands out to me.

Description:
You may remember this photo from my personal website, where I have had, at various times, a black and white scan of this. I recently did a color rescan, but the original print had been badly done, and naturally it was 13 years old when I scanned it. Therefore, I ran the photo through Adobe Photoshop LE to remove the excessive green cast, brighten it, and vastly increase the contrast, and now it looks alright, I think. It's more or less, finally, what I wanted it to be when I originally shot it.

Description:
This was the time that I visited the Portola Railroad in California, primarily to drive this locomotive as part of their "Engineer For A Day" course, or whatever it's called. Title:
AMTK 322 and 413 on Horseshoe Curve (date is estimated)
Description:
This was taken in 1994 on the former Pennsylvania Railroad mainline (then Conrail) on the famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. Amtrak still operated the Broadway Limited between New York and Chicago, and this was it, headed by two EMD F40PHs, both now retired. The Broadway Limited has, for now, been replaced by the Manhattan Limited in Amtrak's timetable, and now all the power for the Philadelphia-Chicago (or at least Harrisburg-Chicago) leg is provided by G.E. Genesis P42s. This has always been one of my favorite "train" shots, even if it isn't great by the standards of orthodox photography, with no abstraction, merely average colors, too-perfect light, and nothing of interest to the non-railfan.

Here's the first of a series of photos I took on a photo runby west of Moscow, PA during the return NRHS special behind ex-Milwaukee Road #261. The location is a wild guess, and is almost certainly inaccurate. Any input for a correction would be welcome.

Description:
This is my third photo on the first runby of 261. This is, I think, the best pan shot that I took during the 1995 NRHS Convention, and one of my best ever with a steam locomotive. The location is a wild guess necessitated by the fact that rrpicturearchives doesn't allow you to omit location or give something vague. Any input for a correction would be welcome.

As the title indicates, the location of this runby is a guess, and at best it was close to Pocono Summit, rather than in Pocono Summit. This was the second place that the 1995 NRHS Convention Special From Scranton to Pocono Summit stopped for a runby, if anyone wants to help figure out the exact location.

Here's 261 on its second runby a few seconds after Picture 1. It wasn't breaking any speed records, but it was doing a good clip for such a short running start. Again, kudos will go to whoever can figure out the correct location for me, as "Pocono Summit" is really a placeholder, and probably not accurate.

MILW 261 At Steamtown Grand Reopening
Description:
This shot is the best that I could get in this situation, unfortunately, as the crowding at the Grand Reopening of Steamtown was the largest that I had ever seen at a rail-related event up to that time, and still rivals anything that I've seen since. Even given that it was my best, I still ended up with a guy with a tripod. Notice that he's taking a video of a stationary object. Right.... I also had to crop this to hide a stain on the print that I scanned this from. Anyway, Reading, Blue Mountain, & Northern 425 is also visible in the background on the right.

NYSW 2400 Working An NRHS Convention Special
Description:
I took this as we were approaching Scranton, and met an NYS&W excursion leaving Scranton. The same train had taken NRHS members from the Central New York and Utica & Mohawk Valley Chapters to Scranton for the weekend, although the convention, as usual was week-long. Months later, the engineer in #2400 (who I knew) commented that he had seen me taking the picture, and couldn't fully believe that it was me, as he thought I was on his train.

ex-NYC 8223 (date is an educated guess)
Description:
The date of this photo is based on the assumption that it was taken on the day that the Adirondack Scenic Railroad reopened to Carter. I'm not sure if this was taken that exact same day, but I'm fairly certain it was around that time, and in any case this photo does give a pretty good idea of what it was like to be at Thendara that year, even if there werg often far more people around than seen here! Since this photo was taken, the entire yard has been resurfaced and the tracks have been completely replaced, meaning that it does look quite different today.
