Album Info:The Athens Line Railroad operates approximately 15 miles of track in the Athens, GA area. The trackage is composed of the southern end of the Southern Athens to Lula branch, and the northern end of the CofG Athens to Madison branch. When the line was purchased from NS there were two customers on the CofG portion, the UGA heating plant and Southwire in Watkinsville. Unfortunately with the economic downturn Southwire ceased production of insulated wire which made it unnecessary to receive shipments of chemicals by rail. Unfortunately this happened just as i was able to get out and shoot the line, so i never thought i would get to see it in operation other than the few chance encounters i had in the past. However that changed upon arriving at Paradise Valley on August 13th, the Athens Line would be making a trip out to Watkinsville to retrieve storage cars stored south of Madison, to be taken out for scrapping. I was able to ride along and here are the pictures from the trip. A big thanks to the Athens Line crew for letting me get these shots!

Description:  This crossing is about a half a mile from my house, in earlier years i often heard them blowing for the crossing on the way to Watkinsville, but back then i had no way to get out and chase them. This past year however the horns stopped, i never figured i would catch them here, let alone ride through here on the train.
