Album Info:Once upon a time in southern PA there was a little RR that wound & twisted its way from farm to farm linking its namesake to the North Central RR (later PRR) at New Freedom, Pa. This 7-mile line still exists under its original cooperate identity, which was established in 1885. In 1906 the New Park & Fawn Grove RR added a few more miles of track. The NP&GF was merged with the Stewartstown in 1923 & was abandoned in 1935. Regular operations on the STRT were last conducted in 2004. I had the pleasure of taking a trackcar ride over the line on March 27. We did some brush removal along the ROW. From my eye this is quite a Railway. The eastern end contains repeated undulating ups n downs approaching 3% with lots of sharp S Curves. Theres an Iron Truss Bridge (with Steel under supports) borrowed long ago from the PRR followed by a long curving fill which contains the now hidden remains of a wooden trestle. Traveling over the line I am reminded of western 3-foot roads with sharp S curves and rapidly changing super elevations. This series of photos begins at the Stewartstown Station at about MP7.1 and ends at MP0 at the Junction in New Freedom. Unless otherwise noted the camera is looking westbound. The rail is about 65 lb and the section I photographed says: LACKa I & C Co. Scranton 11 85. There is an eager group working to bring this line back into operation.
