ATSF 91 - Anaheim, CA - 5/22/90
Description:
On July 4th, 1989, Santa Fe Railway unveiled a pair of FP45s in the resurrected red and silver Warbonnet scheme, dubbed the Superfleet scheme. These were repainted after the railroad restored the California Railroad Museum’s F7A and B units into Warbonnet colors for a public relations film, and the road’s executives realized what a valuable scheme it was. So valuable, in fact, that the new Superfleet scheme was painted on all new power delivered with wide noses, beginning with the GP60Ms. The first two GP60Ms arrived in Los Angeles on May 22, 1990 and, coincidently, that same day a passenger special behind a pair of FP45s (91 and 90) operated on the railroad’s Surf Line. The train, carrying officials of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority were touring the various lines on which they hoped to begin Metrolink commuter train service, is seen here passing through the Amtrak station in Anaheim, California.

The GP60Ms are returning east on their first trip after delivery from EMD. The four-car passenger special would depart later, headed for Cadiz (between Barstow and Needles) and return to try and persuade investors that garbage trains to a proposed garbage dump would be feasible.

SCAX 851 - Fullerton, CA - 6/14/92
Description:
The local railfan community turned out on June 14, 1992, to see Metrolink F59PH 851 lead a test train through Fullerton, California, on its way to Oceanside. Regular service would begin later that year. Still a popular hangout for foamers, Fullertons station looks a bit different now - triple track (that locomotive storage track on the left is now another mainline), a pedestrian overpass, a nicer brick platform (though the nice lawn is gone as a result), more attractive lights, a café ... and those ugly, spiky trees are long-gone!

Amtrak train #36, the eastbound "Desert Wind" (Los Angeles CA to Salt Lake City UT) passes through Lambert, a "station" in eastern Anaheim, California, on January 27th, 1993. Amtrak's colorful 500-class General Electric Dash 8-32BWH diesels were the normal power on trains #35 and #36 at this time, and one could easily handle this five-car consist. In Salt Lake City, the "Desert Wind" would connect with both trains #5 and #6 (the Chicago IL to Emeryville CA “San Francisco Zephyr,” later renamed “California Zephyr”) and trains #25 and #26 (the Portland OR to Salt Lake City “Pioneer”). These trains were in service from October 28, 1979 until May 10, 1997, at which point both the “Desert Wind” and the “Pioneer” were discontinued.

BN 8151
Description:
As an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight (H-BASI1-26) passes through Daggett, in California's Mojave Desert, a platoon of Marines from nearby Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow marches by. The BNSF was not even a year old yet, and most engines had yet to get renumbered, let alone repainted. On the point of this train is Burlington Northern SD40-2 8151, which was never renumbered as a BNSF engine before being sold off to Helm Leasing (as their HLCX 8151).
