Alco Switchers |
Description: |
Four Espee Alco switch engines -- C630's 3143, 3144, 3141 and 3146 -- were stopped on the Huey P. Long Bridge with a westbound transfer run. They were behind an MP train which was waiting for clearance to get into its Avondale Yard. Both railroads had yards at the west end of the bridge, and this causes trains to back up like this. Four-unit sets of C630's were not very common. This was actually two seperate trains which had been combined, so it had a mid-train caboose as well as one on the rear. |

L&N GP38 4005 and SP C630 3146 |
Description: |
L&N GP38 4005 and SP C630 3146 meet on the Southern Railway at Metairie Road, in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. The Alco was on a short siding with a pair of GP9's, one of which had a bad traction motor. SP 3140-3146 were assigned to transfer service in the New Orleans area in early 1973; but by the end of 1977 they were all gone, replaced by GP9's. |
