PRR 5817, BH-50, c. 1956
Description:
Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Martin Zak that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1956. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5817 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5817 was constructed in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. Photo taken from Juniata's 8th Street Bridge.

PRR 5819, BH-50, 1964
Description:
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotives in Frankstown, Pennsylvania, on 16 March 1964. Shown here (L to R) are three drawbar-linked pairs of PRR engines: #5819-#5825, #5817-#5829, and #5815-#5830. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1947 (viz., #5825, #5817, & #5815) or 1948!(viz., #5819, #5829, & #5830). They are about to be scrapped after only 16 years of service! These engines were built originally for passenger service; each unit generated 3,000 horsepower, so they were classified as BP-60's. Due to various chronic problems, however, they were all converted to helper-only units by 1952; each unit gdnerated only 2,500 horsepower then, so they were reclassified as BH-50's.

Description:
Here is page two of a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, page 24. All of these locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service. Top Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. On the right, #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962. On the left, #5817 was built in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962. Middle Photo: At the left is PRR engine #5825, a BP-60 built in May of 1947, rated at 3,000 horsepower, and retired in April of 1952. Bottom Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. At the right, #5819 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. At the left, #5829 was built in December of 1948 and retired in April of 1962.
