Title:
PRR 9686, EH-15, #1 of 2, 1949
Description:
AHC. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chione that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1949. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9686, an unidentified "B" unit, and #9687. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9686 and #9687 were constructed as EH-15's in February of 1949, but later regeared and reclassified as EF-15A's. In this context, this A-B-A trio is rounding the Curve on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to East Altoona to await yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."

PRR 2511, GF-25, 1964
Description:
Wye Switches. Here is the first of seven successive original photos that I took at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 5 October 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2511, #9546-B, and #9686. #2511 is a GF-25 built by General Electric in October of 1962 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #9546-B and #9686 were built by GM-EMD as EH-15's for helper service, rated at 1,500 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as EF-15A's. #9546-B was built in November of 1948 and retired in December of 1966, while #9686 was built in February of 1949. These three units, two freight cars, PRR cabin car #477781, and three ALCO helper engines have just arrived from Altoona and have stopped in the middle of US Route 22 so that the Fireman can call-in to request clearance to proceed up the New Portage Branch line for a short distance and then stop. After that, they'll back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then pull it up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9541, #9686, and #7072. All were built by GM-EMD. #9541 is an EF-15 built in September of 1948 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #9686 is an EF-15A built as an EH-15 for helper service in February of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, but later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A. #7072 is an EFS-17M built in October of 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. These locomotives and a 77-car mixed-cargo freight train are stopped at 3rd Street in Duncansville, awaiting orders to proceed up the New Portage Branch line to Gallitzin and points West. There are also two pushers on the end: engines #8613 and #8606. Once upon a time, there were four sets of tracks at this point ~ as evidenced by the wide signal bridge. This is also where an eastbound freight train that had lost its brakes coming down the New Portage Branch line crashed into several waiting locomotives on Sunday, 6 November 1916.

In this context, they're pulling a 77-car mixed cargo freight train through Duncansville and up the New Portage Branch line to Gallitzin and points West. The wooden shanty ~ sporting a telephone and a coal-burning stove ~ is a left-over from the good old days when the New Portage Branch was double-tracked and switches needed to be thrown at all hours of the day or night.
