PRR 4552, I-1SA, 1949 |
Description: |
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 9 October 1949. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4552 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #4552 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in July of 1944, and retired in January of 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, these locomotives have just passed through the New Portage Tunnel on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |
