EL E8 824 |
Description: |
EL E8 824 at Newark, New Jersey, June 1965, exact day unknown and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as Erie E8 824 in February 1951 (c/n 12222) on EMD Order 2027A, it retained the Erie road number on the EL, classed as PE-22. It later became CR 4013, was retired in January 1978 and scrapped by Naparano in October 1979. In the background is 'blue coal', that's how it appears on the building to the left, single quote and lower case spelling. I'm not sure if that was a brand name, or if they actuallly sold coal that was a blue color. Someone might leave a comment if they know what 'blue coal' was. |

Three National Guardsmen lost their lives as the 824 ripped the turret off this tank. |
Description: |
The tank crew was part of a parade on 4/30/51, they had been given the order to proceed. Since these things don't move all that fast, the full speed Lake Cities caught them in the act. The 824 would be rebuilt and serve into the Conrail years as 4013. Akron Beacon Journal Photo. |
