CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 and E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP7 is leading the East End Way Freight east, having finished switching the industries on both sides of the tracks in Naperville. Since the way freight occupies Track 3, the Dinky is on Track 2, and the commuters were briefly the main ingredient in a train sandwich at the station seen in the background. The Dinky is overtaking the way freight but will stop at Lisle, four miles further east, allowing the way freight to catch up. This will continue until Downers Grove, a likely stopping point for the way freight to perform a few more switching duties usually at Pepperidge Farm.

CB&Q GP7 242
Title:  CB&Q GP7 242
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 28, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The brakeman pictured was Roger Taylor, who didn't appreciate being out in the cold weather. Soon after this photo, he transferred to the Passenger Department and became a Collector on commuter trains. I once spoke to Kenneth Boecker, son of the gentleman who owned the grain tower in the right background, and he shared the following story:

Near the end of steam on the CB&Q, the newest steam power had been bumped from mainline duties, but were still in good shape. One was assigned to the East End Way Freight. The way freights on the CB&Q were typically handled by the R-class 2-6-2's, but they had been retired. One day one of the newer ( and larger ) locomotives had to perform this switching duty you see pictured here, a move down a slight grade and fetch an empty hopper and pull it back up to the CB&Q main. The locomotive got down OK, but when climbing back up, it slipped and the rails rolled over under the locomotive. There was nothing to do but call for the wrecker. The fire was banked (not sure if it was a coal or oil burner) and the locomotive was left for the evening. Needless to say, all the local kids found it and it was a playground for the next few hours, with much whistle blowing, until the cops came around and chased everyone away.

CB&Q GP7 244
Title:  CB&Q GP7 244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 244 switching at Naperville, Illinois on April 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1952 (c/n 14708) on EMD Order 5148, it became BN 1600 and was retired in September 1983. It is seen as the power for the East End Way Freight (to the Dispatcher, this is Extra 244 East) switching the industries in Naperville.

The locomotive is equipped with a steam generator, and has a box on the running board ahead of the engineer's front window, which I believe is for Automatic Train Control equipment. A similiar box appears on the top of the boiler on steam locomotive 4960. Here is an expanation from Karl Rethwisch, retired CB&Q Engineer: Chuck, to my knowledge the 243 and 244 were the only Q Geeps fitted with Automatic Cab Signal equipment. They would, occasionally, show up on the Galesburg Local passenger job. I know of no reasons why these two engines were so equipped.

CB&Q GP7 251
Title:  CB&Q GP7 251
Description:  CB&Q GP7 251 pictured in the lower coach yard at Aurora, Illinois, June 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here in charge of the consist for a steam fantrip. The trip began in West Chicago, and was pulled down the branch line through Batavia to Aurora, where the 251 was cut off and steam locomotive 4960 (a 2-8-2) took over for a trip to Ottawa, Illinois and return. The trip was advertised as a Fathers Day Outing, and the price was $6.00. The Geep was used on the Batavia Branch because 4960 was too heavy for the branch line rails. The Batavia Branch was significant because it was the original railroad that became the CB&Q, chartered as the Aurora Branch Railroad. Some but not all of the CB&Q GP7's were equipped with steam generators, and the 251 is so equipped. However, it is not active in this photo, and was certainly not needed in June. The CB&Q had large steel caps fabricated to cover the steam generator's intake and exhaust vents, and they are in place on this locomotive. The purpose of the caps was to keep the rain out and prevent rust. This locomotive was built in November 1952 (c/n 16712), became BN 1607, and was retired in November 1981.
