CB&Q F3 165C
Title:  CB&Q F3 165C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 165C eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was delivered in October 1948 to the CB&Q as 138A (c/n 7012) on EMD Order E957A, the lead unit of a four unit F3 set 138. The motive power people decided they would prefer a 4500 horsepower locomotive, so they split the 138 four unit set in half, and added a new F7 cab unit to each A-B F3 set, and renumbered this particular set as 165. Although the suffix letters were not displayed in the numberboards until couplers were substituted for the drawbars between the units in the 1960's, the suffixes were displayed in very small 1 inch lettering on the side below the word BURLINGTON. Shortly after this photo date, the C suffix was applied to the F3 cab side and numberboard, and the A suffix was applied to the F7 cab. Two ABBA F3 sets were broken up this way (137 - 138), and four F7 cabs were added, producing ABA locomotives 163 - 166.

CB&Q 165ABC in 1965
Title:  CB&Q 165ABC in 1965
Description:  Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3B and A. Is this the A end or the C end?

CB&Q F3 165C
Title:  CB&Q F3 165C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 165C westbound at Eola, Illinois on February 13, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1948 (c/n 7012) on EMD Order E957A as 138(A), traded for new power in February 1969, it was delivered as the lead cab of F3 A-B-B-A locomotive 138. Although it was numbered 138, a suffix letter was assigned and applied is small one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON on the sides for maintenence purposes. The suffix letter was never displayed in the numberboards or on the nose or sides below the cab. When EMD announced the F7 model in 1950, the CB&Q purchased 10 F7A's and three F7B's. Three sets of pure F7 A-B-A locomotives were assembled (167-169), and the the remaining four F7A's were mated with F3A-B sets from locomotives 137 and 138, creating locomotives 163-166. Again, suffix letters were applied only in one-inch letters on the sides, the 163-166 F7A-F3B-F3A sets being considered as a single locomotive, and were semi-permanently coupled. The F7's were assigned the suffix "A" and the F3 cabs were assigned suffix "C". During the 1960's the 163-166 locomotives began receiving couplers in place of drawbars, and the suffix letters were applied to the numberboards and painted on the nose and sides. This particular locomotive received the suffix treatment sometime between March 1965 and February 1966, based on my photographic evidence. Cut in behind the F's is a new SSW SW1200 #2290 being delivered to the Cotton Belt, likely picked up in Congress Park.

CB&Q 9960CB in 1964
Title:  CB&Q 9960CB in 1964
Description:  CB&Q 9960CB is seen working the eastbound tracks in Eola Yard on September 1, 1964. The 3-track mineline is mid-picture. This F3AB was part of three sets of ABA F3s bought in 1947 for new California Zephyr because the WP and DRG&W were going to use F units. Because they did not fit well into the E-unit rotation the Q used for intercity and suburban passenger trains, they were regeared for freight operation and their steam generators were removed. However, in this lashup, the third unit is an F7.

CB&Q F3 9960C
Title:  CB&Q F3 9960C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9960C at Eola, Illinois on February 7, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This shows 2/3rds of the first set of F3's purchased specifically for California Zephyr assignment. The rear F unit is either a late model F3 or F7. The three A-B-A F3 locomotives (numbered 9960ABC, 9961ABC, and 9962ABC) were obtained in 1947 and assigned to the CZ, the only F units on the CB&Q equipped with steam generators. After they were bumped from the CZ by E units, the 9960-2 F units were re-geared for freight service, repainted from the original Aluminum passenger paint to the freight paint seen here, but kept their passenger series numbers to the end.

Title:  CB&Q F3 9960C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9960C at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as passenger locomotives for California Zephyr service, by the mid-1950's they were bumped from that service, and eventually regeared and repainted for freight service.

CB&Q F3 9961A
Title:  CB&Q F3 9961A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9961A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 15, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1947 (c/n 4426) on EMD Order E791 for three sets of F3 A-B-A locomotives intended for the California Zephyr. These were the only F units on the Burlington equipped with steam generators and lacking dynamic brakes. By the early 1950's they were bumped from Zephyr service and regeared and repainted for freight service, but retained their passenger series numbers. It appears that cab 9961C must have failed and needed maintenance, as this A-B set is pictured here with a B unit, either a Phase IV F3 or an F7. Records indicate that 9961C was traded in July 1963, and 9961A and B lasted a couple more months, being traded in October 1963.

CB&Q F3 9962A
Title:  CB&Q F3 9962A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 9962A westbound at Milepost 28 east of Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was built in October 1947 (c/n 4428) and retired and traded to EMD on an order of GP35's September 1963. The Burlington ordered three sets of A-B-A F3's for the California Zephyr on EMD Order E791A and E791B (the B-Units) , equipped with steam generators but no dynamic brakes. When deliverd, they were painted in Aluminum paint with the black "whisker" passenger stripes. They were once the pride of the Burlington's passenger motive power, but by 1955, they were regeared for freight service and painted in the freight paint scheme, retaining their passenger series numbers. This is one of my earlier train photos, shot on Kodak Tri-X film. It was a grainy film, but fast, ASA 400. This locomotive is seen here two months before retirement.
