NYC 4-6-4 Commodore Vanderbilt |
Description: |
The Commodore Vanderbilt was the first American streamlined steam locomotive debuting in December 27, 1934, with a publicity tour to the major NYC cities. The 1929 Alco-Schenectady built 4-6-4 Hudson was originally NYC #5344 but selected for the Art Deco restyling. As pictured here in Albany, NY, on the NYC publicity tour, the new Hudson had what now is referred to as the "upside down bathtub"design by Carl Kantola. Solid disk driving wheels would be added later to complete the new "modern Art Deco" design. Eventually the "bathtub" was replaced in 1938 with the Dreyfus-designed streamline shroud. To capture the public's interest in the new design, even Lionel and Marx toy trains rushed to produce similar models for sales in the 1930's and 1940's. An unknown photographer took this beautiful & historic photo. |

MILW 4-6-4 #103 - Milwaukee Road |
Description: |
1930's stylish, sleek and fast. Delivered to the Milwaukee Road in August of 1938, this was the epitome of 1930's streamlining and speed. The loco was eventually retired in June of 1951. Specs - class F-7, streamlined, 84" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 415,000 lb, tractive effort of 50,294 lb. No photographer listed and the date is approximate. |

NKP 4-6-4 #171, Nickel Plate (New York, Chicago & St. Louis RR) |
Description: |
Here's another example of the Alco-Brooks Hudson, class L-1a, built in March of 1927. The unknown photographer notes on the back "NKP 4-6-4 #171 is a wonderful machine to see running, but in this condition she still has a formidable façade. She has been idle since June, 1956 but doesn't look it. She is to be cut up, however. Note missing bell." She was sold for scrap in February of 1957 to Luntz Iron & Steel Co who had not yet begun with the torch yet. |

NKP 4-6-4 #171, Nickel Plate (New York, Chicago & St. Louis RR) |
Description: |
Here's another view of #171 built by Alco-Brooks in March of 1927. The unknown photographer wrote on the back of the photo "NKP 4-6-4 #171. Idle for over 1 year, (June, 1956 was the last active month), but she is servicable. Still has "live" grease on her crosshead guides, coal in her tender. She is missing a bell, however." Note that there was a hole in the photograph on the master cylinders. |

Description: |
Nickel Plate #171, a 4-6-4 L1-A, was built by Brooks in March of 1927. Thirty years later, the end is very near for this locomotive, as it was sold to Luntz Iron and Steel Company as scrap. Its last month of revenue service was June of 1956. Over a year later, here it sits on Sunday August 18, 1957 by the roundhouse in Bellevue, Ohio. Photo by James Pope. |
