Mainline railroading in the west is generally a non-stop parade of wide-nosed diesels, so it is refreshing to find older hood units - even if they are in yard service. Here we see a trio of Union Pacific EMD 6-motor power at the West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on February 12, 2011. This set, which spend their days shunting cars in the yard to make up trains for UP’s far-flung system, consists of engines that the Union Pacific acquired from other railroads, either through purchase or merger. UP SD40-2 3111 is ex-UP 3943, originally Missouri Pacific 6043. It is teamed with SD38-2 Y835 (ex-Southern Pacific 2976) and Y824 (ex-UP 2824, nee-McCloud 39). |
