The New Orleans Public Service’s ARABELLA STATION at 5600 Magazine Street had been built in 1893-94 and, after several changes in ownership, was acquired by NOPSI in 1922. The building was used by streetcars until 1948, and when this photo was taken in 1954 it served both internal-combustion and electric buses; but the last trolley buses were withdrawn in 1967. It was acquired by the city’s Regional Transit Authority in 1983 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 4 January 1996. After being unused for several years, RTA sold it in 2001 and it was redeveloped as a Whole Foods Market which opened in December 2002. (approximate date of photo) |
