East Altoona. Here is an image by an unidentified photographer of the southern side of the double-tracked Coaling Wharf in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1932. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3667, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1918 and retired in August of 1953 after 35 years of service. In this context, its tender is being replenished with fuel. On the tracks above it are several hopper cars about to have their contents emptied into the bins below. This structure was replaced by an all-concrete coaling tipple during World War II. William E. Burket Collection. |
