Nearing the end of its life, Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 #1173 sits peacefully in the Marquette, IA yard. Originally built by Baldwin & Company in November of 1899 as Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Vauclain compound 4-6-0 ten wheeler #241, it was renumbered many times - in 11/1905 to CMStP #879, renumbered in 9/1912 to CMStP 4126, simplified & renumbered in 2/1921 to #2384 and finally renumbered CMStP&P #1173. After nearly 55 years of service, the loco was scrapped in April of 1954. Simplfied specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 19x26" cylinders, engine wt of 165,000 lb, tractive effort of 25,327 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
