Here is a postal card entitled "Horseshoe Curve." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Penn Central GP35 2309 growls up Pennsylvania's famous Horseshoe Curve westbound with a merchandise freight. The curve, located west of Altoona on the former Pennsylvania RR mainline to Pittsburgh, was opened to traffic in February 1854. This scene was taken during the Penn Central era, September 1970. Photo: Carl H. Sturner Collection." Shown here (R to L) are Penn Central engines #2309 and #2387. Both are GP35's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. Also visible is four-track Signal Bridge #2416. |
