MILW F40C 49 |
Description: |
MILW F40C 49 westbound at about Paulina Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge was the Chicago Transit Authority (built in 1895 by the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad Company) Northwest branch, removed and all but abandon after the Congress (Eisenhower) Expressway was completed around 1958. This bridge remained because the Milwaukee Road and the C&NW had installed signals on the structure. |

MILW F40C #49 - "Village of Streamwood" |
Description: |
Here's a head-on view of Milwaukee Road F40C #49 (nicknamed "Village of Streamwood" heading up a departing commuter train from Chicago. #49 would go on to be METX #609 after the collapse of the Milwaukee Road commuter service. An unidentified rail fan took these photos in the album all on the same day. |

MILW F40C #49 - "Village of Streamwood" |
Description: |
Here's another view of Milwaukee Road F40C #49 pulling a commuter train into Chicago's Union Station. Only 15 of the F40C's were built by EMD and all went to the Milwaukee Road commuter service around Chicago. #49 ended up on the Metra roster as METX #609. An unidentified rail fan took these photos in the album all on the same day. |

Two Sun Bleached Noses After Years of Facing West |
Description: |
Taken three miles west of State Street at Western Avenue Interlocking where the Milwaukee Road tracks from Union Station turn to the north and in the process cross the CNW tracks from its downtown station. Note the double-slip switches and the different signal heads for each road. #49 had an outbound train while #54 was inbound and had just left the interlocking plant. The tall white building in the background was the Standard Oil Building (Big Stan) a couple blocks east of State Street. Big Stan is now called the Aon Center but remains the third tallest building in the United States. |
