NS No. 193
Title:  NS No. 193
Description:  Norfolk Southern No. 193 (and later 393) was the run-through train from Birmingham to Houston via the SP. Here it was stopped on the NS at the Marconi Drive underpass, waiting for a clear route to the Huey P. Long Bridge about five miles away. When it got to the east end of the bridge, an SP crew would get on and take it cross the Mississippi River to their Avondale Yard. This train had SP SD45T-2 9309, along with former Conrail SDP45's 6688 and 6689 which the SP was leasing from VMV Enterprises. These SDP45's were originally Erie Lackawanna units, and when their lease expired Conrail retired them. Along the way, the 6688 had an accident and its long hood was replaced with one made for an SD45-2.

NORTA 450 and 451
Title:  NORTA 450 and 451
Description:  New Orleans Regional Transit Authority cars 450 (ex-New Orleans Public Service 924) and 451 (ex-919) had just been trucked to the new, standard-gauge RIVERFONT LINE and were parked on their storage tracks. This new line utilized a former Southern Pacific track, while the track next to it belonged to the CSX (originally Louisville & Nashville) and the track on the left was owned by the New Orleans Public Belt. RTA subsequently purchased the CSX line and rebuilt both tracks to broad (62½-inch) gauge. Local transit historian and CSX employee Earl Hampton was enjoying a cold drink on the left.

NOPB-IC at Southport Junction
Title:  NOPB-IC at Southport Junction
Description:  At 9:30AM on this bright Sunday morning Illinois Central GP40R 3105, GP38 9534 and GP38-2 9571 had delivered an intermodal train to the railroad's IMX (Intermodal eXchange) along the Mississippi River at STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD and were returning to MAYS YARD where the crew would go off duty and the geeps would be serviced. In the early evening, a crew would go back on duty and deadhead back to the IMX for the northbound run. This long-standing practice was eliminated a few years later by fueling the units on the southbound train a McComb, and then leaving them at the IMX until departure. The geeps had just crossed the New Orleans Public Belt at SOUTHPORT JUNCTION, but about six years later they installed a connection here with the IC and the crossings were eliminated.

Eastbound BNSF
Title:  Eastbound BNSF
Description:  When LMX B39-8E units 8550 and 8596 showed up in New Orleans on this eastbound BNSF stack train, they were two of the last LMX units still in operation on that railroad. The train was parked on the New Orleans Public Belt's westbound main track near Walnut Street, with the Mississippi River levee on the left. The little rusty object on the left, between the tracks and the bicycle path, was a derelict log skidder. It was left over from when the Bisso company, on the other side of the levee, occasionally dealt in used railroad equipment. It had been here for well over 60 years and was scrapped by the NOPB soon after this photo was taken. There had once been a 2-track yard here, when the NOPB delivered coal to Bisso for use in its tugboats and ferries.

Derelict Skidder
Title:  Derelict Skidder
Description:  This derelict log skidder was parked along the New Orleans Public Belt near Walnut Street for over 60 years, but it was finally scrapped by the railroad shortly after this photo was taken. The NOPB felt that it had become an eyesore and a liability once the bicycle path in the foreground was completed. Before the bike path was created, the skidder was usually covered in thick vegetation, and most people didn't even know it was there!

According to a long-time New Orleans railfan, the late Ed Gebhardt, the skidder was probably brought here by the Bisso Towboat Co., which was located right behind the photographer, on the riverside of the Mississippi River levee. Mr. Gebhardt recalled that Bisso dealt in used railroad equipment as late as the 1930's, and that the skidder had been parked in a 2-track yard right here for as long as he could remember. The yard was long-gone when this photo was taken, and soon the skidder disappeared too. The fire extinguisher must have been someone's idea of a joke!

NO&GC Track (2)
Title:  NO&GC Track (2)
Description:  This track along Brooklyn Avenue in Algiers, Louisiana was first laid in 1889 by the New Orleans, Fort Jackson & Grand Isle Railroad, which was building south along the west bank of the Mississippi River. At one time the railroad’s depot and station were just beyond the vegetation in the distance. After several reorganizations and mergers this track was owned by the New Orleans & Gulf Coast when this photo was taken. These two homes at 709-711 (brown) and 705-707 were typical double-shotgun designs, with an addition on the rear for indoor bathrooms.

Title:  NO&GC Track (1)
Description:  This track along Brooklyn Avenue in the New Orleans suburb of Algiers was first laid in 1889 by the New Orleans, Fort Jackson & Grand Isle Railroad, which was building south along the west bank of the Mississippi River from here. At one time there were houses all along the street, and their front steps descended onto these tracks. By the time this photo was taken, the track belonged to the New Orleans & Gulf Coast, and there were only three houses left. The blue home was at 737 Brooklyn, on the corner with Slidell Street. A depot and roundhouse were once just beyond the vegetation in the distance.

A Little Too Close for Comfort
Title:  A Little Too Close for Comfort
Description:  At 4:30 on the morning of 15 December 2001, Union Pacific train Q-LIWX (Livonia-Waycross) was coming off of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE at EAST BRIDGE JUNCTION and heading for the CSX via the Norfolk Southern BACK BELT. The train had UP SD40-2 3334, C40-8 9262, SD40-2 3533 and CSX SD40-2 8254 with 119 cars. At the same time, the connecting train between CSX No. 145 and UP I-ATLB (Atlanta-Long Beach) was approaching EAST BRIDGE on the New Orleans Public Belt with an NOPB crew, behind UP SD70M 4662 and C44-9W 9764. Unfortunately, the NOPB crew was asleep, as their train ran a red signal and struck the Q-LIWX about 70 cars back, derailing about a dozen cars on the eastbound train as well as the two units and one car on their own train. When this photo was taken about 12 hours later, a crew from Hulcher was cleaning up the mess. Westlake Polymers car WLPX 44124 was leaning over next to EAST BRIDGE JCT. tower.

CN-IC Track
Title:  CN-IC Track
Description:  In late 2002 the Canadian National removed the last vestiges of the former Illinois Central inbound and outbound main lines just north of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. These two lines had been severed at the New Orleans city limit in early 1954, when the IC began using NOUPT; but remained in place to serve various freight customers. These businesses gradually switched to truck, relocated or closed; and in 2000 the last customer, the Blue Plate Mayonnaise plant at the corner of South Jefferson Davis Parkway and Earhart Boulevard, shut down after production moved to Knoxville. In this view, a pair of ICG gondolas were collecting ties along Earhart Boulevard near South Gayoso Street.

Stored Power
Title:  Stored Power
Description:  By the time this photo was taken Amtrak had retired most of its E and F units, and stored many of its remaining older locomotives. Here are six of the surviving older engines stored at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal coach yard: E8Am 436, E9A 419, FP7A's 493 and 492, and E8A's 368 and 353. The 436 was built in May 1952 as Illinois Central 4029, and was upgraded by the IC into E10 2021 in February 1969. Amtrak bought it in February 1973, and it was the only IC unit purchased by Amtrak. The 419 was built in December 1963 as Union Pacific 419, and it had the distinction of being the last E-unit ever constructed. Both of these units were scrapped at NOUPT by Precision National Corp. in 1982.

The 493 and 492 were two of 14 FP7's acquired from the Southern Pacific, and the last two in existence. Originally SP 6454 and 6453, they became Amtrak 117 and 116 in July 1972, were renumbered 377 and 376 in April 1976, and renumbered to 493 and 492 in July 1977. Both were retired in May 1980 and sold to Precision National Corp. for scrap. E8A 368 was built in August 1950 as UP 929. It was subsequently Amtrak 326, 438, 368 and 469 before being retired in June 1981 and sold to PNC. E8A 353 was built in October 1953 as Baltimore & Ohio 26A and was renumbered B&O 1447 in 1957. It wore Amtrak numbers 203, 353 and 467 before being retired.

Crescent and Daylight
Title:  Crescent and Daylight
Description:  For many years its was Amtrak's practice to add cars to the northbound CRESCENT and removed them from the southbound train at Atlanta, resulting in a much smaller consist at New Orleans. This was a continuation of the Southern Railway's procedure with the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. During the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, Amtrak ran almost all of the train -- except for the extra mail cars -- all the way into New Orleans to accomodate fair goers. While attendence at the Fair fell well below the projected estimate, and train ridership never met expextations; during this time the CRESCENT was a very impressive train!

It's 6:45 P.M. at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and the early evening sun was reflecting off of the nose of F40 260 as it and the 262 had just backed in on track 5 with a 17-car train. The train's consist was baggage car 1172 SILVER TREASURE, baggage-dormitory car 1624, coaches 4733, 4737, 4637, 4711, 4639, and 4018, Amfleet lounge 28020, diner 8519, 10-6 sleepers 2436 PACIFIC CREST, 2438 PACIFIC CASTLE and un-named 2903, un-named 11-double-bedroom car 2233, lounge 3109, and coaches 4716 and 4702.

Across the platform on track 6 is the WORLD'S FAIR DAYLIGHT, which would depart for Oregon the next morning. The DAYLIGHT had GS-4 4-8-4 4449, water car PNWC 4219, combine PNWC 3300 MILN D. GILLESPIE, sleeper-lounge PNWC 600 MT. HOOD, coaches SW 542 SONOMA, SW 544 MENDOCINO, SW 546 HUMBOLDT, SW 507 SHASTA, SW 511 STANISLAUS, PAR 2397, SW 500 SAN JOAQUIN, SW 518 TUOLUMNE, and GW 598 RED RIVER, diner SW 156 LAKE PEPIN and observation-lounge GS 1290 APPEKUNNY MOUNTAIN. (GW was Great Western Tours, GS was Grant Supply, PAR was Pacific Railroad Society, PNWC was Pacific Northwest Chapter-NRHS, and SW was Sierra Western.)

The DAYLIGHT had arrived in New Orleans the previous Saturday, and SP 4449 had spent the week parked outside the Fair site. UP 4-8-4 8444 was on display inside the Fair, so for a week there were two big Northern's at the Fair. That's the photographer's Volkswagen RABBIT on the left.

Gulf Coast Limited
Title:  Gulf Coast Limited
Description:  It's 10:20 A.M. and this special edition of the westbound GULF COAST LIMITED (No. 23) is stopped on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at the Elysian Fields Avenue overpass. In addition to No. 23's typical consist of a P30CH and three Amfleet cars, F40 274 is on the front while extra coach 21068 and inspection car 10000 are on the rear. The extra equipment was in the midst of an inspection tour that had begun in Atlanta on the 9th. The little train ran over the former West Point Route to Montgomery, up the former L&N to Birmingham and then down to Mobile; where it was added to No. 23.

All of those people standing next to the train are making sure that the last two cars are being successfully uncoupled so the train can continue on to its destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Southern Railway MP15DC 2413, seen here waiting on the Freight Lead, delivered the last two cars to the ICG at East Bridge Junction, where fresh-serviced F40 279 was waiting. From East Bridge Junction, the train ran over the ICG to Baton Rouge; and the next day it continued on to Shreveport over the KCS.
