L&N E7A 780
Title:  L&N E7A 780
Description:  It's Saturday 1 May 1971, and at midnight Amtrak had taken over or eliminated almost all of the country's long distance passenger trains. Louisville & Nashville E7A's 779 and 780 had just brought the very last L&N passenger train into New Orleans, and were resting at the NOUPT sand tower. In a couple of hours, they would back into the station and then leave with all of the L&N's passenger cars that were still there.

USL Stack Train
Title:  USL Stack Train
Description:  A trio of freshly-painted Seaboard System U-Boats - U33B 5624 and U36B's 5773 and 5752 - power an eastbound United States Lines stack train towards the railroad's Gentilly Yard on the east side of New Orleans. The train originated on the Missouri Pacific in Houston as train XHOAV and is bound for Savannah, Georgia. At Gentilly Yard it will become SBD train 202. SBD - and later CSX - power usually ran all the way from Savannah to Houston and then back to New Orleans, where the locomotives would be replaced by freshly-serviced units. The train was discontinued in late 1986 after U.S. Lines entered bankruptcy.

SP AXAVT
Title:  SP AXAVT
Description:  We're on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at Frenchman Street where the brakeman on SP train AXAVT had just "pulled the pin" and was signaling for his engineer to pull ahead. The AXAVT was one of the country's earliest dedicated stack trains; and when this photo was taken, it was one of the few then in operation. It ran from the Port of Long Beach to New Orleans, and handled American President Line containers exclusively, mostly on blue APLX cars. In this view, the cars were being delivered to the Southern Railway for delivery to their destination in Atlanta as a part of train No. 222. The locomotives were GP38-2 4802, GP35 6593, GP38-2 4830 and GP35M 4160.

Oliver Junction
Title:  Oliver Junction
Description:  Casting their reflections upon the water of the Peoples Avenue drainage canal, a pair of Norfolk Southern run-through trains meet at Oliver Junction. Number 393 -- on the left -- is stopped and waiting for No. 314 to clear the single track connection between Terminal Junction, on the BACK BELT, and here, on the NS main line. No. 393 is headed for the Southern Pacific and has Espee SD45T-2's 6841 and 9333 with B40-8's 8065 and 8040. No. 314 is coming from the Union Pacific with NS GP50 7067, C30-7 8052 and SD40-2 6110. Both of these trains run between Houston and Birmingham.

SP 3553
Title:  SP 3553
Description:  Apparently someone at the Espee's Avondale Yard didn't think an Alco C630 and three RSD12's would have enough power to get this transfer run over the Huey P. Long Bridge, so they added GP9 3553 just to make sure! The train is eastbound on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at Shrewsbury Road; and the KCS crossing is just ahead, below the Causeway Boulevard overpass.

SP U33C 8792
Title:  SP U33C 8792
Description:  You wouldn't know it from looking at this set of power; but we were along the Louisville & Nashville at the Read Boulevard grade crossing, a few miles east of the railroad's Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. SP U33C 8792 was heading east and running light with Southern SD45 3130 and SD35 3040, on their way to get a train which had been parked on the long siding east of the yard because SP couldn't accept it. This was a very common occurrence back then!

Bump
Title:  Bump
Description:  On a foggy morning in October low-nose SP GP9 3712 pushes the ICG's New Orleans wreck train into the West High Curve of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Just beyond the wrecker, and on the opposite track, is SP GP9E 3387 and - sticking up in the air - SP caboose 1274. The 1274 was on the rear of a westbound train that was stuck on the bridge behind an MP train. For some reason, the MP could not take their train into their yard; so the SP decided to send some engines over from the east side of the river and pull their train back off of the bridge. Anyhow, it was a dark and foggy night, and SP 3387 coupled into the 1274 just a little too hard, causing it to jack-knief like this; and now the ICG wrecker has come to make things right!

Shrewsbury Road
Title:  Shrewsbury Road
Description:  Two sets of light power wait on the Norfolk Southern BACK BELT for a route through East Bridge Junction. Both sets are probably headed to their respective yards at Avondale, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. SP MP15AC's 2702 and 2703 are returning from the Norfolk Southern's Oliver Yard, while MP 3291, UP 4277, MP 3125 and UP 3265 -- all SD40-2's -- are on their way back from the CSX's Gentilly Yard. SP 2702 and 2703 were the very first MP15AC units built by EMD, and the first dozen of these began their careers in south Louisiana. Although initially operated in cab-to-cab sets, nose-to-nose operation was later adopted.

NS No. 193
Title:  NS No. 193
Description:  Norfolk Southern No. 193, the run-through train from Birmingham to the Espee at New Orleans, sits on the NS BACK BELT at the Marconi Drive overpass. The train is waiting for a clear route through East Bridge Junction and onto the Huey P. Long Bridge, about five miles ahead. The locomotives are SP SD45T-2 9309 with VMV SDP45's 6688 and 6689. The VMV units still wear the blue paint of their former owner Conrail, and originally belonged to the Erie-Lackawanna. The 6688 was rebuilt with SD45-2 radiators after an accident.

Title:  The New U.P.
Description:  It was a couple of years after the 1982 MP-WP-UP merger before Union Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives became common on the Missouri Pacific around New Orleans, so it was a real treat to find units from all three roads outside the diesel shop at Avondale yard. From left to right are WP GP40 3531 (with UP SD45 No. 21), UP SD40-2 3785, and MP GP38-2's 2166 and 2205.

Title:  Streetcar Mishap
