PRR Altoona Car Shops, 1965
Description:
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here is all that remains of the Pennsylvania Railroad's engine ladder and ready tracks just East of the 17th Street Bridge. In olden days, this was one of the busiest places in all of PRR-Altoona. But by June 1965, there are no more roundhouses (once there were three of them here), no more locomotives waiting to be serviced or to be of service, and no more Altoona Car Shops ~ most of their functions having been transplanted to the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Nothing much is left but ghosts and echoes . . . which have since been supplanted by a shopping mall and the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum. (#15 of 44)

PRR Passenger Station, 1965
Description:
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Prominent here is the tail-end a westbound passenger train that has stopped at the Altoona Station. Note the short train and the small number of folks on the tarmac. In olden times, the trains were much longer, and the platform was much more crowded and covered by the Civil War-era trainshed. Also visible are two of the PRR's 12th Street Shops buildings at the left, the wrought-iron 12th Street Footbridge crossing over the tracks, and the Altoona Passenger Station a little further up on the right. They're pulling a westbound mail & express train under the 7th Street Bridge on its way up the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh. (#27 of 44)

Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9537 is an EF-15 constructed in September of 1948 and retired in May of 1966 after just 18 years of revenue service. They're pulling a westbound train consisting of empty hopper cars past WORKS Tower, under the new version of the 4th Street Footbridge, and up the Allegheny Mountains to the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. Looks like front-end air conditioning! (#33 of 44)

They're pulling a westbound merchandise train past WORKS Tower. What's notable, here, is that this train is on one of the "passenger" tracks and will not stop in Altoona to change crews. In 1965, this was the exception ~ nowadays, it is the norm. (#34 of 44)

Shown here are the end of the Pennsylvania Railroad's new 4th Street Footbridge, the partially-demolished remains of the original Footbridge, as well as some of the PRR's 4th Street Shops paralleling Chestnut Avenue. It's worth noting that a new extension over the Shop area was never erected ~ and now, even the "new" Footbridge has been removed. (#36 of 44)

Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here are the roof of WORKS Tower in the foreground, the east- and westbound "passenger" tracks at the left, two westbound freight trains ready for dispatch, and two idling yard-service locomotives on the right.
