Here are thirteen original photos that I took of Penn Central Railroad property and trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. These color slides are presented in the order that I took them ~ starting at 4th Street, then shifting to 24th Street. 'Twas a lazy, hazy day in July!

Shown here in the foreground is the two-track, west-facing signal bridge located next to the 4th Street Bridge. Description:
Hazy. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of Penn Central Railroad property in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. Shown here (L to R) are some of what used to be Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Car Shops, the two-track mainline through Altoona, as well as several freight trains awaiting crews and engines to pull them up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Awaiting permission to proceed is a westbound merchandise freight train, headed by PC engine #6076. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Altoona Yards (#2 of 2), 1973
Description:
Hazy. Here is an original photo that I took of Penn Central Railroad property in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. Shown here on the left are several freight trains awaiting crews and engines to pull them up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the right is what used to be the Eastbound Receiving Yard. Given that some of the switches at the Yard's throat have been removed, chances are that the railroad cars now stored there face uncertain fates. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Hazy. Here is an original photo that I took of a Penn Central Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. Shown here (L to R) are PC engines #6076, #6161, #6142, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by EMD. #6076 is an SD-40 built in 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower; its original PRR number was the same. #6161 and #6142 are SD-45's built in 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower each; their original PRR numbers were the same. The crew has received permission to proceed, and are in the process of pulling their merchandise freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the right is a portion of the PC's WORKS Tower.

They are passing under the 4th Street Bridge with their merchandise freight train, and are about to begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the foreground is the two-track, west-facing signal bridge; the 7th Street Bridge is also visible in the distance.

Shown here (R to L) are PC engines #9136 and #9158. #9136 is an SW-9 built by EMD in 1953 and rated at 1,200 horsepower; its original PRR number was "8536." #9158 is an NW-2 built by EMD in September of 1948; its original NYC number was "8733." They are about to pass under the 4th Street Bridge with a four-car mixed-cargo local freight train, plus two cabin cars! Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Hazy. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of Penn Central Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. Shown here (R to L) are PC engine #2638 and another unit whose number is not recorded. #2638 is a U-25B built by General Electric in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower; its original PRR number was "2538." They are pulling a merchandise freight train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve through Altoona to Enola and points East. The famous Brick Plant is just up around the curve, to the left. Photo taken just West of the 24th Street Bridge.

Shown here (F to R) are PC engine #6188 and another unit whose number is not recorded. #6188 is an SD-45 built by EMD in 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower; its original PRR number was the same. They are returning to East Altoona after helping/pushing a train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they uncoupled and returned down the Mountains to make yet another helper/pusher run.
