Title:  CB&Q GP7 204
Description:  CB&Q GP7 204 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on September 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, this train snuck up on me. I shot a passing westbound and spun around to catch this train. I had to make a choice, shoot the westbound first or shoot the eastbound. I chose westbound first and this resulted in a good shot of the toilet discharge pipe behind the steps of 204. Looks to me like the Q combined two trains for the final move to Chicago.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 206
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 206 at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive lacks an opening for steam generator water below the walk, so I conclude it was not equipped with a boiler for passenger steam. This conflicts with the CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated November 1, 1955, showing this locomotive so equipped.

CB&Q GP7 206
Title:  CB&Q GP7 206
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 206 at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Having finished switching the north side of the tracks, the East End Way Freight is preparing to switch the south side. The head end Brakeman ( seen by the white shed hustling to set the switch ) will guide the train to couple to the cars for Moser Lumber ( Moser was at the boxcars on the left ) staged earlier by the way freight. With the cars for Moser ( out of frame on the right ) on the front of 206, the train will back across all three main line tracks and occupy Track 3 ( the main track on the left ), and swap loads for empties. The empties will be on the front of 206, so before proceeding out of town, the way freight will do a flying switch maneuver, running toward its standing train. The locomotive will cut off at speed about half way, accelerate toward the standing train but head into the siding. The Conductor will throw the switch, the empties will roll past the locomotive in the siding and smack into the standing train, usually with considerable noise and dust. The locomotive will pull out, couple up to the train, pump air, and depart for Downers Grove.

I suppose your eye is drawn to the Milwaukee Road bulkhead flatcar, so for the record it is MILW 67118, first car in the Burlington's East End Way Freight, which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. This locomotive was built in September 1951 (c/n 13175) on EMD Order 5072, became BN 1562, and was retired in October 1982.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 206
Description:  CB&Q GP7 206 at Naperville, Illinois on March 31, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1951 (c/n 13175), became BN 1562, and was retired in October 1982. It is seen here on the east end of a westbound locomotive set, being guided back to its train (note the brakeman on the steps) after making a setout at Naperville. In charge is GP20 900, followed by GP7 205, 225, and 206, it was unusual at this late date for GP7's to be assigned road service. It was also somewhat out of the ordinary for a road freight to make a setout at Naperville. One would assume that a boxcar had been delayed on its journey, and the customer was hopping mad. The CB&Q agent then made arrangements for the boxcar to be setout here for the East End Way Freight, due in Naperville in about an hour. Normally, the boxcar would have been setout at Eola, another 10 miles or so west of here, but that would have delayed its delivery by another day, since the way freight's train was already made up and ready to depart, as soon as this train clears the main.

CB&Q GP7 209
Title:  CB&Q GP7 209
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 209 at Naperville, Illinois on April 21, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Seen here heading the East End Way Freight, it is backing through all three crossovers at Naperville. This move was likely a problem for the dispatcher, who had to shut the railroad down briefly in this neighborhood while the way freight crossed over.

Typically, the way freight arrived each weekday morning in Naperville on Track 1 (the track on the far right), running against traffic for about 10 miles from Eola to Naperville. Once in Naperville, the way freight stopped and phoned the dispatcher to get permission to unlock and throw the switch to leave the main and enter the siding. Once clear of the main, Track 1 was available for traffic. The way freight would switch the industries on the north side, and when finished, phone the dispatcher for permission to cross over to the south side. This was a bigger problem for the dispatcher; now all three main tracks had to be shut down for a few miles in each direction. Once the disptacher found the window (there was considerable waiting on the part of the way freight), six switches were electronically unlocked, The signal bridge (behind me in this photo) went to red in both direction on all three tracks, the ground throws, which had previously been mechanically unlocked by the way freight crew were thrown, and the backup move proceeded (seen here). There was a crew man following the train back and realigning the switches and locking them as the way freight cleared. The dispatcher was called and told he could have his railroad back. Once on the south side, generally the way freight held Track 3, cut off his train and switched the south side, which by this date was only Moser Lumber, a track barely seen off to the far left. At one time there was also an oil depot and a quarry to switch on this side, but the quarry had long been abandon (later it became the municipal swimming pool) and I never saw the oil depot receive anything. Once the way freight completed his chores on the south side, he phoned the dispatcher and received permission to leave town and proceed to his next assignment, generally Downers Grove. There was one interesting move at Moser Lumber. Since the empties pulled from Moser would be coupled to the front of the locomotive, this required a "flying switch" maneuver to get them to the other end. The locomotive and empties would head to about this point, reverse direction, and with considerable acceleration, head west toward his standing train. The switch was aligned to head the locomotive into the siding, and at about half way there, the freight cars were cut off, and the locomotive accelerated away and into the siding, The switch was thrown and the free rolling freight cars rolled past the locomotive and slammed into the standing train. One crew man was one the freight cars attempting to slow them down with the hand brake, but more important was to not allow the freight cars to stall on the switch, so more often than not there was quite an impact as the rolling freight cars and standing way freight met.

This locomotive became BN 1566 and was retired in March 1983. It is seen here about to back the eastbound East End Way Freight across all three of the Burlington's three main tracks. The swiches are manned by two of the crewmen, and although they are manually operated, they are electrically locked by the dispatcher. Upon receiveing permission, the switches were unlocked and lined for the crossing move, and immediately relined for the main. The way freight will occupy Track 3 for about an hour or so, as he switches Moser Lumber on the south side, and then heads east for Downers Grove.

Yep, not good !!
Title:  Yep, not good !!
Description:  While pulling tracks for a yard cleaner the Engr. was not informed as to WHAT he had ahold of. Seems he'd grabbed a track of mostly covered hoppers, LOADED covered hoppers. While pulling west he started down the yd. lead which WAS down. With only eng. brakes he was soon out of control. About a mile and 1/2 later he stopped, in Gordons junk yard. A PRR gon loaded with scrap was shot through a fence and 5 feet deep into the dirt of a yard of a neighbor of the scrap yard. No injuries.
