GATX Tank Car 94683
Title:  GATX Tank Car 94683
Description:  GATX 38,500-gallon tank car 94683 had been built by General American Transportation Corp. in 1968 for vinyl chloride and butadiene service as a part of the GATX 94650-94706 series. It had a LT WT of 113,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 281,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds, and had an overall length of 82-07. These 57 cars were the second largest group of 6-axle tank cars, exceeded only by the 75 DUPX 29500-series cars; and were also one of the shortest-lived fleets of 6-axle tank cars, with a lifespan of less than 12 years. During 1979 and 1980 all of these cars were withdrawn from service; but their story didn’t end here. They were subsequently modified with 4-wheel trucks and returned to service as GATX 26701-26758. (Former GATX 98238 was also included in this group.) At least some of these cars operated into the 21st Century, but all were gone by mid-2013.

Description:  Tank car ACFX 17456 was on the Penn Central at Enola, Pennsylvania. The 38,000-gallon car had a capacity of 276,000 pounds and a light weight of 118,000, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds. It was built in January 1967 with SHPX reporting marks but it was quickly relettered ACFX. This was one of 40 6-axle cars built under ACF Lot 71-14104 as SHPX 17451-17475 and 17481-17495. They were initially leased to Stauffer Chemical Co. for vinyl chloride service, and were last listed in the OFFICIAL RAILWAY EQUIPMENT REGISTER in July 1985.

NATX Tank Car 37300
Title:  NATX Tank Car 37300
Description:  One-of-a-kind North American Car Co. tank car NATX 37300 was on the Penn Central at Thorndale, Pennsylvania. The car had been built by North American Car in 1966 and rode on American Steel Foundry trucks. Small lettering at the near end of the car read "TANK BUILT BY A.M.F. 7-66." Some NACC cars that were assembled in Texarkana had tanks that were built by Beaird Industries, an AMF subsidiary in Shreveport. It was retired in 1987 or 1988, so it lasted over 20 years. This was a very early example of a 6-axle tank car.

DUPX Tank Car 12405
Title:  DUPX Tank Car 12405
Description:  E.I. Du Pont de Nemours 8-axle tank car DUPX 12405 was one of five cars built by AMF in May and June 1970 as DUPX 12401-12405. Most photos of these cars show their later appearance, after their insulation and outer jacket had been removed and the cars went into ethylene glycol service; but this image illustrates their original, insulated appearance. As built, this 38,273-gallon car had a LT WT of 162,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 364,000 for a gross rail load of 526,000; but removing the jacket reduced its LT WT to 143,200 pounds and increased its LD LMT to 382,800. Car 12403 disappeared from the Equipment Register in April 1991, but the other four operated into the 21st century. They finally went into storage in December 2007 and were scrapped by Schnitzer Steel in January 2010. The 12405 was dismantled at Dothan, Alabama while the other three were cut up at Cartersville, Georgia.

MCPX Tank Car 23020
Title:  MCPX Tank Car 23020
Description:  Monsanto Chemical Co. tank car MCPX 23020 had been built under ACF Industries Lot No. 18-13181 in November 1966 as a part of the 23000-23036 series. These 37 cars were built to carry elemental phosphorous, and because this is 80% denser than water, they had the lowest capacity of any 6-axle tank cars, just 22,500 gallons. They had a LT WT of 93,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 301,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds; and although the cars were originally equipped with American Steel Foundries trucks – as shown here – at least some were refitted with Buckeyes. The last of these cars were retired in 1992.

CCBX Tank Car 4815
Title:  CCBX Tank Car 4815
Description:  Union Carbide 48,330-gallon tank car CCBX 4815 was photographed on Conrail at Enola, Pennsylvania. It was one of 34 cars built by General American Transportation Corp. between April and June 1969 as ESMX 4800-4833, with a gross rail load of 526,000 pounds. They were built for the Essem Corp., a subsidiary of Union Carbide, for propylene service. Between 1979 and 1981 North American Car Corp. installed jacketing on 25 of the cars, including this one, for vinyl chloride service. This change increased 4815’s LT WT by about 10 tons, to 173,900 pounds, and decreased its LD LMT by the same amount, to 352,100 pounds. The jacketing also increased the diameter of its tank, changing its clearance diagram from Plate C to Plate F. In 1985 this car had its reporting mark changed to CCBX, which also belonged to Union Carbide; in 1989 it was one of 25 cars sold to Vista Chemical and received the VICX reporting mark; then in 1998 these 25 cars were bought by Union Tank Car Co. but kept their VICX reporting mark. As VICX 4815, its last trace record was on 5 September 2008 when the Union Pacific delivered it to Hockley, Texas for scrapping. It had almost reached its required retirement age of 40 years.

GATX Tank Car 26712
Title:  GATX Tank Car 26712
Description:  General American Transportation Corp car GATX 26712 was on Conrail at Reading, Pennsylvania wearing a 1075 (liquified petroleum gas) placard. This car had been built by GATC in June 1968 with 6-wheel trucks as a part of the GATX 94650-94706 series for vinyl chloride and butadiene service, but after about 12 years, the entire group (along with car 98238) was modified with 4-wheel trucks for LPG service and renumbered GATX 26701-26758. The change lowered the cars’ LT WT from 113,000 pounds to 106,000, their LD LMT from 281,000 pounds to 157,000 and their gross rail load from 394,00 pounds to 263,000. At least some of these cars operated into the 21st Century, but all were gone by mid-2013. The HRXH stencil indicates this car was last serviced by Hugo Railcar Repair at Hugo, Oklahoma.

Carroll is on the north side of Jackson and is the location of a couple of scrap yards, so we can assume the car did not leave there in one piece.

ACFX 85302
Title:  ACFX 85302
Description:  ACFX 85299-85302 were constructed under ACF Industries Lot No. 71-13576 in September 1969. The 26,600-gallons cars were built for the Shippers' Car Line Division of ACF and initially leased to Nalco Chemical Co. for motor fuel anti-knock compound (tetraethyl lead) service. They were originally painted blue with prominent Nalco lettering, but at least this one was repainted black with metric data. After the introduction of catalytic converters on most vehicles in the 1975 model year, the use of tetraethyl lead as a motor fuel additive steadily declined and these cars were retired by 1987. The car was photographed at the Illinois Central Gulf's NORTH BATON ROUGE YARD, near the Ethyl Corporation’s anti-knock compound plant.

This car had a CAPY of 386,000 pounds and a LT WT of 140,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 526,00 pounds. They were listed in the EQUIPMENT REGISTER from April 1970 until July 2001.
